Coconut oil has been used for hundreds of years for many aspects of health care because of its wonderful benefits. Whether using it to cook, nourish or moisturise, its properties such as anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial are undeniable.

“We just love the stuff and can’t recommend it more.”

We’ve chosen our own top miracle benefits of coconut oil, and will be covering these in our upcoming blogs in the next few weeks.  Today we take a look at the amazing way in which coconut oil can benefit your hair, and ways in which to use it.

Benefits of Coconut Oil #1: Hair

When using coconut oil on a regular basis, your hair will start to feel thicker and shinier, and your scalp cleaner. Coconut oil has excellent moisturising properties and penetrates hair more deeply than normal conditioners. It can protect against dandruff and help to treat lice, and is also effective as a styling product instead of a gel or wax. Coconut oil also coats and protects the hair from harsh environments, UV rays and damage from using styling tools such as hairdryers. Eating coconut oil will also provide your body with the nutrients to nourish your hair from the inside out.

Try out these simple ways to use coconut oil for hair care:

How to Use Coconut Oil as a Hair Mask for Healthy Hair and Hair Growth:

Wash your hair with shampoo and towel dry. Apply 1-2 tablespoons of liquid coconut oil to the hair and massage from root to tip (melt the cocount oil in a small bowl placed in a large bowl of hot water if it is in a solid state).  Wrap your hair up in a shower cap or cling wrap and leave to soak in for at least 30 minutes. Remove the shower cap and either shampoo to remove oil or rinse out. You can apply a small amount of coconut oil to the tips of hair afterwards if desired.

How to Use Coconut Oil as a Hair Gel/Wax:

Style your hair naturally with coconut oil and feel the benefits – no more chemicals and expensive products! Simply scoop a small amount of coconut oil, rub it between the palms until it is melted and not lumpy, and apply from root to tip to wet or dry hair. Be careful not to use too much as you don’t want your hair to look greasy. Style your hair as desired.

How to Use Coconut Oil to Treat Dandruff:

Before you go to bed at night, make sure your hair is clean and dry. Then scoop a small amount of liquid coconut oil into your hands and massage into your scalp. (You can either rub it between your palms or heat it up in a small bowl placed into a larger bowl of boiling water). Wrap your hair with a towel and sleep overnight. When you wake up in the morning, wash your hair with a natural shampoo and comb through. Do this every second night until the problem clears.

We highly recommend using extra-virgin organic coconut oil which you’ll be able to get at your local health store.
